NEWPORT and DETROIT – Gretchen Maxine Brewer, 85, passed away quietly Aug. 12, 2009, with her loving family around her. She was born in Castle Hill, a daughter of Clint and Viola (O’Donald) Lovley, who raised 11 children. Gretchen grew up in Knox and married the love of her life, Frederick “Buggy” Allen Brewer in 1942. They lived a very happy life together for nearly 61 years and lived in Detroit for more than 50 years. She was greatly loved by many friends and family from all over. She was recently recognized for her hard work and kindness for her many years as a citizen of Detroit. Gretchen will also be remembered for her pumpkin chocolate chip cookies. She will be sadly missed by all who knew and loved her. She was a member of Good Cheer Club, Detroit, for 50 years; Sebasticook Valley Club, Pittsfield, for 30 years; Detroit Night Drifters Snowmobile Club for 30 years, a lifetime member of Detroit Methodist Church and most recently a member of People’s United Methodist Church, Newport. She is survived by her daughter, Myrna Davis and longtime companion, Mike Lloyd, of Bangor; grandchildren, Shanika Davis and Gyasi Davis, both of Bangor, Wade Brewer and wife, Jennifer, of Newport and De-De (Brewer) Polly and husband, Ryan and their two children of Sanford; two great-grandchildren, Katlin and Lauren Brewer of Newport; a great-great-granddaughter, Lillian Brewer of Oakland; two sisters, Katie Clark and Merlene and husband, Robert Gipson, all of Newport; a daughter-in-law, Sally Brewer of Newport; a sister-in-law, Gerry Varney and family of Newport; special nieces, Kimberly Wing and Victoria Donaldson, both of Etna, Shirley Patterson and Debra Lovley, both of Newport, Sonia Garcia of California and Wanda Cyr of Florida; two special nephews, Danny and David Gipson and their families, all of Massachusetts; good friends, Betty Rich and Doris Neal, both of Detroit and Lillian Smith of Presque Isle; as well as many other friends and family from the towns of Detroit and Newport. In addition to her husband, Gretchen was predeceased by her son, Wayne M. Brewer; and a great-grandson, Craig Brewer. Friends may call 4-7 p.m. Friday, Aug. 14, at Crosby & Neal, 117 Main St., Newport. Funeral services will be held 10 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 15, at People’s United Methodist Church, Newport, with the Rev. Ellen Bridge officiating. Burial will be at Palmyra Village Cemetery, Palmyra.
