AUGUSTA – Donald R. “Dick” Pound Sr., 77, formerly of Millinocket, passed away peacefully Friday, Aug. 14, 2009, surrounded by his loving family at MaineGeneral Medical Center, Augusta. He was born Oct. 9, 1931, in Millinocket, the youngest of the 14 children to John T. and Estella Mae (Reynolds) Pound. Dick graduated from Stearns High School, Millinocket, in 1949. He played at many sports in high school and throughout life, and played on the Millinocket Emerson Pills. He married Betty Lou Mackenzie in 1952 and enjoyed a full life with her in their 57 years of marriage. Together they had seven children. Dick served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. He was wounded in battle and awarded the Purple Heart. After his discharge from the Army, Dick went to work for Great Northern Paper Co., Millinocket. He worked in many capacities at the mill in his 38 years of service, including as foreman of the coater plant. He retired from the mill in 1984. Dick was an avid sportsman, enjoying hunting, fishing and horseracing. He was a lifetime member of the Elks lodge, Veterans’ of Foreign Wars and Disabled American Veterans’, Millinocket. Dick is survived by his wife, Betty Lou; his children, Sheila Frantz and her husband, Scott, Beth Bolduc and her husband, Jim, Carrie Shaw and her husband, David, Atwood Pound and his wife, Kathleen, Dr. James Pound and his wife, Susan, Dr. Donald R. Pound Jr. and Donna Jean Pound; his grandchildren, Zachary, Sarah, Carrie Marie, Anna, Jacqueline, Autumn, Amanda, Nicholas, Bobbi-Jo, Lucy, Scarlett and Owen “Bud”; his great-grandchild, Aidyn; his sisters, Theresa Madore, Elizabeth “Libby” Brooks and Marie Henry; and his brother, Oswald “Ozzie” Pound. A committal service will be held noon Wednesday at the New Maine Veterans’ Memorial Cemetery Chapel, Mount Vernon Road, Augusta. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Donald R. Pound Scholarship Fund, 70 Edison Drive, Augusta, ME 04330. Arrangements are in the care of Knowlton and Hewins Funeral Home, One Church St., Augusta.
