LINCOLN – Philip D. Reed passed away peacefully in his sleep Aug. 15, 2009, at home due to complications from lung cancer and pneumonia at the age of 80. He was born July 31, 1929, in Lincoln, to Thomas B. and Doris (Lane) Reed. After graduating from Mattanawcook Academy at the age of 16, he began his banking career in Lincoln, which lasted more than 50 years in the same community. He served two years in the Air Force as a finance officer. He was a member of the Lincoln Lions Club, sat on the board of trustees of Lee Academy and was a founding member of the original Hospital Administrative District No. 1 Board of Trustees. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his sister and his brother-in-law; and his beloved first grandson, Jason Peter “Pete” Gabarro in 1994. Philip is survived by his wife of 58 years, Betty (Whalen) Reed; daughters, Dorothy and Ralph Gabarro, and Nancy and John Stevens; and son, Jason and Elana Reed; special grandchildren, Seth Gabarro and his fiancee, Molly Corkery, Anthony Gabarro and Kendra Stevens; sisters-in-law, Mary Whittier and Patricia Whitten; several nieces and nephews. Friends may call 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Thursday at Clay Funeral Home, 7 Lee Road, Lincoln, where funeral services will be held 1 p.m. Friday with the Rev. Dr. Bruce Young officiating. Interment will be at Lincoln Cemetery.
