PATTEN – Chester Richardson, Chet to many and Junior to others, died Aug. 15, 2009, at Mountain Heights Health Care Facility, Patten, where he had received the love and care of the staff since February. Chester was born June 1, 1924, in Patten, to Chester Sr. and Ethel Baston Richardson. He graduated from Patten Academy in 1943 when he left home to serve his country during World War II aboard the USS Canberra, and in later years renewed and made new acquaintances with shipmates at annual Canberra reunions. Upon returning home in 1947 he and his dad started Richardson’s Hardware, which today remains in the family and stands as one of the few truly “small town” hardware stores left in Maine. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his brother, Bob; and his sister, Madeline Roop, with whom he always maintained close relationships. His family was paramount in his life, especially his wife and closest friend of 62 married years, Virginia “Ginny,” who survives him along with his daughter, Lois and husband, Spencer Main, of Hermon; his son, Steven and wife, Vicki, of Patten; his four grandchildren, Tara Main of New Hampshire, Eric Main of Glenburn, Kirsten Hogan of Douglas, Mass., and Nathan Richardson of Patten; and six great-grandchildren. A memorial service will be held 10 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 19, at Patten Cemetery with a reception afterward for his family and friends at Steve’s home, 30 Gardner St., Patten. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you make a donation to your favorite charity.
