CORINTH – Francis R. Stubbs, 86, died Aug. 17, 2009, at home after a long battle with cancer. He was born Sept. 26, 1922, in Bangor, to Nellie and Dennis Stubbs. Francis met and married his wife of more than 60 years, Vernice Clement in 1942. Francis joined the Army a week later, at the beginning of World War II in 1942, serving in Europe until the end of the war in 1945. After the war ended, Francis interviewed for a job with the Bangor & Aroostook Railroad and lucked into a job he had for nearly 40 years. Francis is survived by his wife, Vernice; a sister, Patricia Marley of Stoughton, Mass.; three sons, Dennis Stubbs of Bangor, James and his wife, Eileen Stubbs, of Brewer and Tom and his wife, Audrey Stubbs, of Corinth; and his grandchildren, Sherry, James and his wife, Amy, Andrew and his wife, Mindy, Jennifer, CarrieAnn, Ryan and Amy. Memorial services will be arranged by family for a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the American Cancer Society.
