GORHAM, Maine — The Maine medical examiner has identified the two victims of a fire that engulfed a vehicle this week as a mother and son from Windham.
The bodies of 41-year-old Karen Devine of Windham and her 12-year-old son Michael were burned beyond recognition Wednesday morning in the fire at a quarry in Gorham. The state medical examiner’s office said Friday they were identified through DNA testing at the state police crime lab in Augusta.
Steve McCausland of the Maine Public Safety Department says work is still under way to determine the manner of death, as well as the cause of the fire.
The official cause of death was “inhalation of products of combustion.” The Devines were survived by Dr. John Devine from Windham, who practices in Manchester, N.H.
