LITTLETON, N.C. – Edwin Keith Clarke, 77, formerly of Old Town, died peacefully May 1, 2009, with his granddaughter, Maria Sykes, by his side, after major heart surgery at Wake Medical Center, Raleigh, N.C. He was born March 7, 1932, in Old Town, son of Bunny (Small) Sherwood and David Clarke. Keith graduated from Old Town High School in 1951 and Gould Academy, Bethel, in 1952. He served in the U.S. Army as a specialist third class while stationed in Germany. Upon returning to the U.S., he worked on the ground crew for Capital Airlines in Washington, D.C., and New York City. He returned to Maine to work for his family’s business, Sherwood Wood Products, and he was employed for several years at the University of Maine, Orono. Keith will be fondly remembered as a faithful son and husband, a devoted Episcopalian, a gifted gardener, and an avid New England sports fan. This special man dearly loved his family, friends, community, church and country. He will always be remembered as a good Samaritan who contributed to society with generous gifts and service. Keith is survived by his stepson, Carlton Murphey; three grandchildren, Glenda Cox, Dennis Murphey and Maria Sykes; aunt and uncle, Clyde and Lyle Campbell; cousins, Ted Stuart, Diane Stuart Perrine, Barbara Campbell Hume, Jane Campbell Brann, Bruce Campbell, James Campbell, Walter Phair, Katherine Foster Dall, Stephen Foster, Banton Foster and Timothy Foster; and many second and third generation cousins. Keith was predeceased by his beloved spouse, Camilla Moore Clarke; mother and stepfather, Bunny and Clyde Sherwood.
