SHERMAN – The Rev. R. Carlton Huntley, 94, departed this life and entered heaven Aug. 26, 2009, in Patten. He was born Aug. 23, 1915, in Sherman, the eldest son of Richard Carlton Huntley I and Ella Jane Bryant. He was the grandson of Willis Huntley and Amanda Perry, and Ira Bailey Bryant and Catherine Smith. Carlton served Jesus Christ as a minister of the Gospel for 59 years and was the pastor of Monarda Calvary Baptist Church, 1964-2008. Prior to that, he was also a pastor of a church in Stacyville. He was active in Christian work with daily vacation Bible schools and summer Bible camps; influenced many lives through Bible based spiritual counseling; and was known and will be remembered by many friends. Carlton believed in and taught about loyalty to family and country. He was a tenderhearted, caring man to his family and friends, and anyone who needed a helping hand. His sensitivity extended to the animal world, he planned and loved raising a garden every year and he cared deeply for all of God’s creation. In addition to Christian work, he worked as a postmaster, a pulpwood contractor on farms and was a school bus driver for many years. He is survived by his wife, Arlene (Campbell), whom he was married to for 68 years; his son, Richard C. Huntley III and his wife, Glenice M. (Hunt), of Sherman; grandchildren, Richard C. Huntley IV and his wife, Sumita (Pongpaonilsila) Huntley, of Bangor, Tammy J. (Huntley) Huber and her husband, Scott, of Dresden, Nathan L. Huntley of Sherman, and Travis Stone of Florida; great-grandchildren, Abigail R. Derstine, Kacey M. Huber, Chase R. Huber and Jacob Carlton Huber, all of Dresden; one sister, Dorothy J. (Huntley) Pereshula of Tewksbury, Mass.; one brother, John I. Huntley of Sherman; many cousins, nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his brother, A. Erwin Huntley; and one grandson, Clyde W. Huntley. The family thanks Dr. Hrynick and his staff; the staff at Mount Heights Nursing Facility; Patten Ambulance crew; Houlton Regional Hospital; and his home care workers, Mary Willette, Annabelle Gallagher, Terry Lyons, Diane Lane and Susan Cullen. Friends may call 10 a.m.-noon Saturday, Aug. 29, at Calvary Baptist Church, Stacyville, where funeral services will be held noon with the Revs. Robert Chamberlain and Donnis Willigar and Pastor James O’Hara officiating. Interment will be at Sherman Mills Cemetery. Arrangements by Bowers Funeral Home, Island Falls.
