MILFORD – Walter G. Dow Sr., 90, died Saturday, Aug. 29, 2009. He was born Oct. 19, 1918, in Howland, the son of Frank and Maude (Nason) Dow. He married his sweetheart, Marion, Jan. 22, 1945, at St. Ann’s Catholic Church, Bradley. After 63 years of marriage, Marion died and life for Walter became extremely lonely without her. He proudly served in the military for four years during World War II, in the 37th Division. After the war he spent his entire working career at the paper mill in Old Town, where he cherished the friendships he made with his co-workers. He never passed by the mill that he didn’t pay homage to all the benefits he derived from his 36 years of employment there. Walter loved life and he loved people; his interest and concern for his fellow man never wavered. Walter was predeceased by his daughter, Susan Marie; a grandson, Douglas Walter Dow; and seven siblings, Frederick, William, Wallace, Mary and Mayfair Gillingham, Gardys Bickford and Thelma Reed. He is survived by a sister, Inez and brother-in-law, Linwood Hayden; a brother, Herbert and sister-in-law, Margaret Comeau; a son, Walter Dow Jr. and his wife, Maureen, of Glenburn; a daughter, Ellen and husband, Roderick Johndro, of Milford; seven grandchildren, Tami Willis, Linda Wilson, Kevin Chessa, Jennifer Wilson, Michael Dow, Audrey Theriault and Amanda Thomas; eight great-grandchildren, Zachary Chessa, Bradley Wilson, Brady Wilson, Tyler and Cassie Willis, Kamrin and Kadin Thomas and Allison Wilson; and his most special friends, Brenda and Paul Tucker. A Mass of Christian burial will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 2, at Holy Family Church, 429 Main St., Old Town, with Father Thomas Farley officiating. Burial will be immediately after at Forest Hill Cemetery. A luncheon will be held after the services in the fellowship hall. For those who would like to remember Walter in a special way, gifts may be made in his honor to Parish of the Resurrection of the Lord, 429 Main St., Old Town, ME 04468. Services entrusted to Birmingham Funeral Home, Old Town.
