OLD TOWN – Daniel L. Cote, 88, passed away Aug. 29, 2009, after a courageous battle with lung cancer. Dan was born Dec. 30, 1920, in Old Town. He lived all his life on Treat and Webster “French Island.” Dan was in the Civilian Conservation Corps No. 160 from 1938 to 1940. Dan was a World War II veteran. In 1942 he enlisted in the U.S. Army, where he was involved with campaigns at Normandy and the invasion of Northern France and Ardennes. He also participated in the Battle of the Bulge. He returned home from the war in 1945 with the rank of sergeant with the 460th Battalion Battery B. He married the love of his life, Viola Bouchard in 1946 and they were together for 57 years before Viola passed away in 2004. He was a life member of VFW Post No. 3381, a member of Knights of Columbus and American Legion, all in Old Town. Dan was employed for 35 years at James River Corp., as a central control operator, retiring from the mill after 35 years of service. He enjoyed cooking on the grill, driving and camping. One of his favorite things to do was going to camp at Pleasant River Lake with his son-in-law. Throughout the years, he and Steve worked together fixing the camp, enjoyed hunting and fishing trips, and sitting around the fire on the beach. He was predeceased by his wife, Viola; his parents; and two brothers, Louis and Clement Cote. He is survived by his four children, Carl Cote of Old Town, Linda Cote of Bangor, Nancy Marra and her husband, Dave, of New Hampshire and Judy Polyot and husband, Steve, of Orono. He was the grandfather of Benjamin Ashe and Danielle Quindley of New Hampshire, Kerry Polyot-Stefani of Bangor and Sean Polyot of Hermon. He was also a great-grandfather to Alyvia and Madden Ashe and Jacob and Zachary Quindley, all of New Hampshire. He leaves his beloved sister, Velma Holleran; and brother, Alfred Cote, of Old Town. He will be missed by many nieces, nephews and friends. A Mass of Christian burial will be held 10 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 3, at Holy Family Church, 429 Main St., Old Town. Burial will be immediately after at St. Joseph’s Cemetery, Old Town. After the services, family and friends are invited for a luncheon at the parish hall. Services entrusted to Birmingham Funeral Home, 438 Main St., Old Town.
