CARMEL – Theodore “Ted” Johns, 64, husband of Barbara E. (Ballanger) Johns, died Aug. 29, 2009, at a Bangor hospital after a brief illness. He was born Nov. 3, 1944, in Bangor, the son of Theodore A. and Thelma A. (Berry) Johns Sr. Ted was a U.S. Army veteran of the Vietnam War and served with the Army National Guard retiring after 23 years of service. He worked for the U.S. Postal Service for 33 years, serving in various capacities retiring in 1999, and was also a substitute instructor for Penobscot Job Corps. For more than 30 years, Ted operated Carmel Valley Golf Course. As an avid golfer, he ran many tournaments including the Milk Train Open, later named the Ted Johns Memorial Open, where he would mentor and encourage children to play golf. One of Ted’s greatest golf accomplishments was placing second in the Maine State Amateur Golf Championship. He was active in the community by volunteering on the ambulance service, coaching Little League and as a member of the Benevolent Lodge No. 87, AF & AM, Carmel, where he was past master. Ted enjoyed NASCAR and online gaming, where he met many friends around the world. Surviving in addition to his wife of Carmel, are one daughter, Lainie Hill and her husband, Rob; two grandchildren, Cory and Dylan Hill, all of Carmel; two brothers, George B. Newhall and his wife, Constance, of Bangor and D. Richard Newhall and his wife, Adah, of Bangor; several nieces and nephews. Family and friends may visit 5-7 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 2, at Kiley & Foley Funeral Service, 69 State St., Brewer, where a service honoring Ted’s life will be held 7 p.m. as the visitation concludes.
