FORT KENT – Pierre Z. Freeman, 89, beloved father and husband of Yvette (Levesque) Freeman, died Aug. 30, 2009, in Fort Kent. He was born Oct. 17, 1919, in Wallagrass, the son of Theophile and Alice (Ouellette) Freeman. He attended schools in Wallagrass, Fort Kent and Millinocket, where he graduated from Stearns High School in 1940. Due to a medical condition, Pierre was unable to serve in the military during World War II. He began his career at Pratt & Whitney Propeller Division in Connecticut and after several years moved back to Maine, where he opened a small restaurant in Fort Kent, and as a bonded transporter he transferred Canadian men into Maine lumber camps. He owned and operated a hardware and sporting goods store in Fort Kent for many years. Pierre was also co-owner and president of Fort Kent Drug Co. In his younger years, Pierre owned and piloted a small plane, which he used to bring injured lumber workers out of the woods to Fort Kent for medical treatment. He enjoyed outdoor activities and was an avid golfer, hunter and fisherman. He was a member of Fort Kent Golf Club, and he and Yvette spent many winters in Sun City Center, Fla. Pierre was a fourth degree Knight of Columbus for more than 60 years. Pierre’s family lovingly referred to him as “Pop.” He was a man of honor and principle and he will be missed by his family who loved him dearly. Pierre is survived by his wife of 65 years, Yvette (Levesque) Freeman; and his five children, Christopher and his wife, Judy, of Westford, Mass., Carolyn Daigle and her husband, Richard, of St. John, Mary Crowley and her husband, Timothy, of Caribou, Peter and his wife, Wynne, of Caribou, and John and his wife, Mary, of Westmanland. In addition, he is survived by nine grandchildren, Christopher, Jason and Matthew Freeman, Melanie Morgenthaler and Ricky Daigle, Adam and Steven Crowley, and Tyler and William Freeman. He is also survived by one great-grandson, Daniel Morgenthaler; and one great-stepgranddaughter, Jayden Blackstone Eye. He was predeceased by his parents; and eight siblings, Lawrence, Joseph, Paul, Simon, Phillip, Francis, Ann Marie and Theresa. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 5, at St. Louis Catholic Church, Fort Kent. Burial will be immediately after at St. Louis Catholic Cemetery. Friends may call prior to the service 9-10:30 a.m. at Daigle & Nadeau Funeral Home, Fort Kent. In lieu of flowers, those who wish may donate in Pierre’s memory to the charity of their choice.
