BANGOR and BREWER – Edward W. Treat, 86, died Aug. 31, 2009, at a Bangor hospital after a brief illness. He was born March 6, 1923, in Bangor, the second son of John W. and Doris C. (Currier) Treat. Ed’s youth was spent attending Bangor schools and enjoying the neighborhood of Kenduskeag Avenue. He often told stories of his adventures growing up there. It was there that he developed his interest in Ham radio operation and obtained his ham license in his pre-teen years. Summers were spent at the family cottage on Phillips Lake and his love for that area continued throughout his adult life. For many years to come, he reunited with his father and brothers in November at Phillips Lake for a week of hunting camp. In 1941, he enlisted in the military and was assigned to the Fifth Army Air Force where he became a radio operator overseas in the South Pacific for the duration of World War II. In 1946, he married D. Lillian LeGasse. They were married nearly 60 years until her death in February 2006. Together they built their home in Brewer and raised their family. Ed retired from his business as an electrical contractor in his mid fifties and accomplished his dream of building a log cabin on Phillips Lake. He and Lil enjoyed many trout fishing trips and spent hours and days canoeing on Northern Maine lakes and fishing the West Branch of the Penobscot River. They also enjoyed years of cruising Penobscot Bay in their boat, the Oquasa. For the duration of his life, his love for Maine never waned and he and Lil spent their last years together picnicking and exploring by car throughout the state. Ed was a former assistant scout master in Boy Scout Troop I, Brewer, a member of Brewer Kiwanis Club and also a member of Penobscot Valley Electrical Association. He will be missed by those of whom he was so proud, his daughters, Patricia Gardiner and Barbara Elliott, both of Bangor; his son, Robert Treat and his wife, Peggy, of Winterport; his grandsons, Benjamin Treat and his wife, Anne-Marie, of Brewer, James Elliott and his fiancee, Ashley Johnson, of Bangor; his great-grandchildren, Rachel and Adam Miller Treat and Lily Elliott; his brother, John Treat and his wife, Bette, of York; a sister-in-law, Mildred Treat of Holden; and many other relatives. He was predeceased by his parents whom he so respected; his wife, Lil, whom he so missed; and his brother, George C. Treat, whom he so admired. A service honoring Ed’s life will be held 7 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 3, at Kiley & Foley Funeral Service, 69 State St., Brewer, where family and friends may visit 5:30 p.m. until the service begins. Burial will be at Mount Hope Cemetery, Bangor. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Brewer Firefighter’s Relief Association, 151 Parkway South, Brewer, ME 04412 or Bangor Humane Society, 693B Mount Hope Ave., Bangor, ME 04401.
