PORTLAND – Irene P. Brawn, 95, of Birchwood at Canco, died Sept. 2, 2009, after a brief illness. She was born Sept. 20, 1913, in Westbrook, the daughter of Henry and Lottie (Landry) Pedneault. She grew up in Westbrook and attended St. Hyacinth School as a child. She attended Westbrook High School, where she was active in many sports, and she graduated in 1930. Shortly after graduating she moved to Washington, D.C., and worked as a secretary. After returning to Westbrook, she married Donald P. Brawn and raised three children. She worked for many years in the cost department at S.D. Warren and eventually became the secretary to the mill manager. After retiring, Irene and Don enjoyed 17 years wintering in Englewood, Fla. She and Donald were avid dancers and enjoyed the camaraderie they had at the Elks Club, Englewood, Fla. Irene loved her gardens, both flower and vegetable, and she spent hours tending them. She had a particular skill for landscaping, and these skills were reflected in her attractively designed yards. She was particularly proud of her raspberry patch, and many tasty raspberry pies came from it. Irene was the oldest of four children, and she was predeceased by them all. She was also predeceased by her husband in 1999 after 59 years of marriage. Irene is survived by her three children and their spouses, Paul and Janice Brawn of Standish, Peter and Patricia Brawn of Cape Elizabeth, and Martha and Michael Fasulo of Linneus. She has eight grandchildren, Meredith Sanville, Sarah Nicholson, Greg Brawn, Katie Alden, Jason Brawn, Kristin Brawn, Sam Fasulo and Leah Fasulo; and 10 great-grandchildren. The family extends a special thanks to the staff at Birchwoods at Canco, who, with the assistance of Beacon Hospice, provided the excellent care that allowed Irene to remain in assisted living until her passing. There will be a memorial service to celebrate Irene’s life 11 a.m. Saturday at Blais & Hay Funeral Home, 35 Church St., Westbrook. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to The Good Shepherd Food-Bank, P.O. Box 1807, Auburn, ME 04211-1807.
