BELFAST – Mary Hollingdale Proulx passed away Sept. 12, 2009, in Belfast, after a courageous 17-year battle with cancer. She was born June 4, 1926, in Calais, the daughter of Frederick and Charlotte (Lello) Hollingdale. She graduated from Cony High School, Augusta, in 1944 and the University of Maine, Orono, in 1948. She began her teaching career at Lawrence High School, Fairfield. She met Aime Proulx, the love of her life, and they were married Nov. 22, 1951. She chose to stay home and raise her children, then resumed her career in Belfast, teaching at the Robertson School and Crosby Junior High School. She loved her students and enjoyed going to work every day. She served on the Maine Humanities Council, was a trustee of Belfast Free Library and was on the Parish Council. She was a member of the Retired Teachers Association and the Epsilon Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma. Mary was predeceased by her husband of 56 years, Aime; her son, Frederick; and her grandson, Zachary. She is survived by her three children: her daughter, Sarah Tanner and husband, Bruce, of St. Charles, Mo.; her son, Robert Proulx and wife, Janet, of Baileyville; and daughter, Martha Proulx of Waterville. The lights of her life were her three grandsons, Mike, Chris and Dan Proulx. She is also survived by her two sisters, Frances Wadleigh of Augusta and Sarah Jarossi and husband, Arthur, of Thomaston; one sister-in-law, Valerie Marcoux of Waterville; special family friends, Judy and Forrest Warren of Belfast; many nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be held to honor her life 10 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 19, at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church, 81 Court St., Belfast. In lieu of flowers, Mary requested that donations be sent in her memory to Waldo County Home Health and Hospice, P.O. Box 407, Belfast, ME 04915.
