PORTLAND, Maine — A Standish, Maine, woman has pleaded not guilty to charges that she beat her husband with a baseball bat on Easter morning and then shot herself in the abdomen to fake a home invasion.

Linda Dolloff entered her pleas Thursday to charges of attempted murder, elevated aggravated assault and filing a false report. She limped slightly in court, and her lawyer, Dan Lilley, says the bullet shattered in her hip.

Lilley told the Portland Press Herald that the state’s theory “just doesn’t make sense.”

Jeffrey Dolloff was beaten so severely that the medical workers who first responded did not believe he would survive. Lilley contends Linda Dolloff was physically incapable of carrying out the attack on her husband. He previously noted that neither of the Dolloffs owned a baseball bat.
