BANGOR and BREWER – Phillip Arthur Ward lost his battle with heart disease Oct. 2, 2009, surrounded by his loving wife and all of the family that could be there, at his home. He was born Dec. 26, 1930, in Brewer, the son of Irving L. Ward and Evelyn (Scripture) Ward.
He graduated from Brewer High School in 1949. He was the owner of Ward Composition Co. for 10 years until he went to work for the Bangor Daily News as a linotype operator. He was later promoted to head the dispatch department until his retirement in 1987. Active in the community, he coached Little League and was a member of Brewer Recreation Organization. Phil was known for his athletic abilities as a talented basketball, baseball and tennis player, and later developed a great love of golf. Phil was the longest active charter member at Bangor Municipal Golf Course. Surviving family members are his wife of 60 years, Leona M. (York) Ward; sister, Judith I. (Ward) Orcutt; children, Marjorie E. Ward of Bangor, Pamela M. and husband, William B. Cahoon, of Wallingford, Conn., Donald P. Ward and wife, Pamela (Mangeot), of Fairborn, Ohio, Ronald I. Ward of Bangor, Thomas A. Ward and wife, Karen (Harris), of Bangor and Christopher A. Ward and wife, Martha (Neff), of Bangor; daughter-in-law, Susan (Pence) Ward of Wichita, Kan.; grandchildren, Megan, Edward, Casey and Hope, Jessica and Rob, Sara and Ari, Anna, Therese, Psy, Daniel, Samuel, Tommy and Dillon; great-grandchildren, Jordan, Zachary, Carter, Cole, Cameron, Paige, Zoey, Cahrey, Lexi and David; several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by brothers, infant, Darrell, Richard L. of Andover, Conn., and Rodney I. Ward of Summerfield, Fla. Phil was pre-deceased by his son, Dennis, by several hours, who passed away in the evening of Oct. 2, 2009, in Wichita, Kan.
Friends are invited to call 6-8 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 7, at Brookings-Smith, Clark-Piper Chapel, 55 South Main St., Brewer, where funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 8, with the Rev.
