FORT FAIRFIELD and WINSLOW – Harriet B. Delano, 82, wife of the late Ralph P. Delano, passed away Monday morning, Oct. 12, 2009, at an Augusta health care facility, after a brief illness. She was born Dec. 26, 1926, in Fort Fairfield, the daughter of Joseph W. and Laversa (White) Barnes. She was a graduate of the Fort Fairfield High School, Class of 1945, and furthered her education at the University of Maine, Orono, where she received a degree in home economics. Harriet was married to Ralph P. Delano, June 11, 1949, and had been a member of Fort Fairfield Bethel Baptist Church for many years. Mrs. Delano was a member of the Philomathian Club, Fort Fairfield, and Fort Fairfield Chapter of Beta Sigma Phi Sorority. Harriet greatly enjoyed crossword puzzles and spending time with her family. She will be remembered as a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and homemaker. Harriet had been a resident of Winslow for the past six years, where she lived with her son, David. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Delano was predeceased by her husband, Ralph, March 9, 1999; three brothers, George, W. Glen and Ronald Barnes; and five sisters, Henrietta Barnes, Eveline Barnes, Olive Hill, Maude Durepo and Mary E. “Betty” Stevens. She is survived by five sons, Douglas Delano and his wife, Linda, of Wasilla, Alaska, Daniel Delano and his wife, Julie, of Dayton, Ohio, David Delano of Winslow, Dana Delano and his wife, Roberta, of Houlton, and Craig Delano and his wife, Susan, of Frankfort; three sisters-in-law, Alice Barnes of Orono, Ruth Barnes of Fort Fairfield and Thalia Delano of Halifax, Nova Scotia; nine grandchildren, six great-grandchildren, numerous nieces and nephews. She will be loving remembered a special family friend, Jeffrey Ripley of Winslow. Friends may call 11:30 a.m.-1 p.m. Friday, Oct. 16, at Giberson-Dorsey Funeral Home, 144 Main St., Fort Fairfield, where the funeral service will be conducted 1 p.m. with the Rev. Mark Babin officiating. The interment service will take place at Riverside Cemetery, Fort Fairfield. A time continued fellowship with refreshments will be held at VFW Paul Lockhart Post No. 6187, Presque Isle Street, Fort Fairfield, immediately after the interment service.
