ELLSWORTH – Shane R. Smith, 76, passed away peacefully Oct. 16, 2009, surrounded by his loving family at a Bangor hospital, after several years of failing health. He was born Oct. 20, 1932, at Otter Creek, the son of Maurice E. Smith and V. Esther (Tripp) Smith. Shane was a very skilled welder by trade and worked for years at Thorsen’s Machine Shop, Hancock; Hinckley Boat, Southwest Harbor; Billings Diesel, Stonington; JBF, Southwest Harbor; and later had his own welding business. He received many compliments on the work he produced. Being left-handed, he taught himself to play a guitar designed for a right-handed person, and spent many hours singing and playing country music. He also enjoyed his woodworking shop and was cleaver at creating some lovely pieces. Another love of his was nature’s wildlife, feeding a flock of mallard ducks, wild turkeys, the deer and a family of raccoons, which consisted of a mom with her four babies. He was a very kindhearted man, and always willing to lend a hand to anyone who needed it. He is survived by his daughter, Debora Lymburner; granddaughter, Miche Lymburner; grandson, “Cody” Lymburner, all of Franklin; his life companion, Gloria Austin of Ellsworth; her sons, Mark and Jonathan Austin; and his sister, Martha Limeburner of Ellsworth. He was predeceased by his parents; and his two brothers, Maurice Jr. and David. A graveside service will be held 1 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 22, at Otter Creek Cemetery. Those wishing to remember Shane, and his love of animals, may send a gift to Ark Animal Shelter, P.O. Box 276, Cherryfield, ME 04622. Condolences may be expressed at www.jordanfernald.com.
