BREWER, Maine – The unbeaten Bangor High School Rams won their eighth game of the season Friday night and their 74th over Brewer High School in a long-running rivalry with a 41-13 victory at Doyle Field. It was the final game of the regular season for both teams.

While Brewer was able to stop Bangor’s well-regarded ground game, the Rams rapidly answered through the air, with quarterback Joe Saccareccia’s three touchdown passes in the second quarter. By halftime, the Rams led 35-0.

Bangor’s top receivers were flanker Josiah Hartley (three touchdown receptions, four total catches, 95 yards), tight end John Kelley (two catches, 46 yards) and split end Nate Henigan (three catches, 36 yards). Throughout much of the game, the 102nd meeting of these cross-river rivals, Saccareccia was able to loft long, high passes into the hands of his tall trio of receivers.

“They can throw and they can run. Our thought was to try to contain (tailback Lonnie) Hackett the best we can and knowing Joey would probably throw,” said Brewer coach Don Farnham. “They have some real tall receivers we didn’t match up well with, height-wise. He throws it up and they go get it.”

Bangor scored first in the game, with a 12-pay, 70-yard drive ending with Saccareccia’s 6-yard TD run off right tackle with 2:32 left in the first quarter. The Rams made it 13-0 five seconds into the second quarter as Hackett capped a five-play, 38-yard drive with a 3-yard TD run.

Brewer’s scores didn’t come until the fourth quarter, when Jamie Williamson scored on a six-yard run to complete a 10-play, 85-yard drive with 4:59 left in the game. The Witches scored again 49 seconds later after Jordan Richards recovered a Rams fumble at the Bangor-32, with Qasey Perry capping a five-play drive with a 5-yard TD run.
