A Winterport woman was issued a summons for theft Thursday after she allegedly tried to shoplift a variety of items from the Hannaford supermarket on Broadway in Bangor by concealing them in a large purse.

The list of items that Deborah Taylor, 52, allegedly slipped into her purse consisted of dog food, tea, cereal bars, stool softener and bubble bath, with a combined dollar value of about $40, Bangor police Sgt. Brad Johnston said Friday. (Dawn Gagnon, BDN)

Bangor police summoned a local man who allegedly tried to leave the Shaw’s supermarket on Main Street without paying for three small frozen pizzas he’d selected.

Sgt. Brad Johnston said that a Shaw’s loss prevention officer caught up with Randy Fullerton, 23, of Bangor in the store’s vestibule after Fullerton walked past the cash registers without paying for the frozen pies.

When confronted, Fullerton handed the pizzas, worth $10.47, to the security officer and fled on foot. With the security officer chasing him, Fullerton didn’t make it out of the parking lot before he decided to give up. He returned to the store, where he stayed until the police arrived. Firefighters from Bangor were surprised to find no one around when they were called to investigate a possible propane leak Friday afternoon at the Internal Revenue Service offices at 324 Harlow St.

According to Bangor Assistant Fire Chief Darrell Cyr, the propane leak call was the result of an error made by someone at the IRS’ Boston location.

Cyr said that the episode stemmed from a burner problem in the Bangor IRS office that morning. The burner was repaired at that time and staff in the Bangor office sent paperwork stating as much to Boston, where a worker thought a gas leak of some sort was in progress Friday afternoon and called Bangor fire officials.

There was no need to evacuate the building because no one was there. The office apparently closed early and staff members had left for the day, said Cyr, who found a note to that effect at the building. (Dawn Gagnon, BDN)
