NEWINGTON, N.H. — State and federal scientists will be releasing dye into wastewater treatment plants along the Piscataqua River starting Tuesday to study its flow along the New Hampshire-Maine border.
The dye may briefly turn the water reddish but is not harmful to people or the ecosystem.
The federal Environmental Protection Agency and New Hampshire Department of Environmental Services are studying discharges from the Pease and Newington treatment plants.
Information from the study will be used to determine shellfish harvest closure areas. The dye will be released over 48-72 hours.
