ORRINGTON – Our beautiful mother Shirley B. (Brown) Hurd, 81, joined her beloved husband, Walter, Oct. 26, 2009. She passed peacefully in her sleep at home in the care of her loving family. Mom was born July 4, 1928, at home in Bangor, the eldest daughter of Eugene G. and Ethel H. (Smart) Brown. At Bangor High School, Mom was active in band/orchestra playing the clarinet, art, chorus, girls’ hockey and co-captain of the girls’ basketball team, graduating in 1946. Mom began her banking career at Eastern Trust and Banking Co. In 1961, she was hired at Merchants National Bank. Working in a male-dominated industry, Mom’s strong work ethic resulted in her being a role model as one of the first women in the area to be promoted to manager and loan officer. After a successful career, she retired from Maine National Bank in 1990. As well as being a wonderful wife and mother, Mom’s inner beauty was revealed through her poetry and time spent with family. The laughter of loved ones was music to Mom’s ears. Mom and Dad were virtually inseparable, sharing interests in music, dancing, performing in minstrel shows and plays, camping, socializing and travel. She was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary of Orrington. Mom and Dad were very proud to serve as Troop Greeters. She is sadly missed by her children, Jan M. Kimball, Dale Quimby and husband, Tim, all of Orrington, and Craig Hurd of Rockland. Her surviving siblings are Edwin Brown and wife, Sandra, of Naples, Fla., Franklin Brown and wife, Deborah, of Northeast Harbor, Roger Brown of Otis, and Joyce Nichols of Westford, Mass. She is also missed by grandchildren, Nicholas Kimball and wife, Stacey, Katie Kimball, Erin Quimby and wife, Mary, Alyssa Quimby and Connor Hurd; as well as several nieces, nephews and cousins. She was predeceased by her parents; her husband of 54 years, Walter; brother, Eugene G. Brown Jr.; and son-in-law, Ted Kimball. The loving, compassionate care extended by the warmhearted women from Hospice of Eastern Maine brought great comfort to our mother and our family and friends. A service of remembrance will be held 11 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 29, at Brookings-Smith, Clark-Piper Chapel, 55 South Main St., Brewer, with the Rev. Brenda Leclerc, pastor of First United Methodist Church of Orrington, officiating. Family and friends are invited to call 10 a.m. until the time of service Thursday. Those who wish may honor Mom’s memory by contributing to First United Methodist Church of Orrington, P.O. Box 108, Orrington, ME 04474 or Hospice of Eastern Maine, 885 Union St., No. 220, Bangor, ME 04401. Condolences to the family may be expressed at www.BrookingsSmith.com.
