WINTER HARBOR – Melvin H. Rolfe, 78, died Oct. 30, 2009, at a Bangor health care facility. He was born Oct. 22, 1931, in Gouldsboro, a son of the late Elwood and Anna (Young) Rolfe. Melvin served his country in the Army during the Korean War. While in the Army he was selected to be pitcher for the U.S. Army’s baseball team. Melvin was a long haul truck driver for more than 50 years, traveling millions of miles. During 38 of those 50 years of long haul trucking, his son, Kippy accompanied him. He was extremely patriotic and visited Pearl Harbor in 1994 with his daughter, Joyce. He also enjoyed his weekly Beano nights with his daughter, Candy. Melvin will always be remembered for his great sense of humor and love of NASCAR, especially Kyle Busch. He was a longtime member of Knights of Phythia and a member of American Legion for 36 years. Melvin was predeceased by his son, Kevin, in 1994. He is survived by his wife, June of Winter Harbor; his three children, Joyce Groh and her companion, Rob Gordon, of Ellsworth, Candace Rolfe and her companion, Larry West, of Steuben, and Calvin “Kippy” Rolfe and his friend, Mable, of Winter Harbor; brothers, Wesley Rolfe and his wife, Marion, and Wendell Rolfe and wife, Betty; two grandsons, Michael Pierce, who follows in Melvin’s footsteps as a long haul trucker and David Sprague who attends Peninsula School, Gouldsboro; as well as many nieces and nephews. Melvin also leaves behind his faithful companion, his dog, Tiffany. A service of remembrance will be held 1 p.m. Friday, Nov. 6, at Knights of Phythia Lodge, Route 1, Gouldsboro.
