CUPERTINO, Calif. – Arlo Eugene Gilpatrick passed away Nov. 17, 2009. He was born Sept. 28, 1916, in Patten, to Dr. Ora and Amy (Carpenter) Gilpatrick of Mars Hill. His father was a dentist and his mother a hat maker. In his early years, Arlo was an Eagle Scout. He liked to cross-country ski, and kept a pony and a cow. He sold milk to help pay for his college tuition. Arlo graduated from the University of Maine in 1940 and was drafted in the U.S. Army Air Corps in October of that same year. He served in the Air Force in Australia during World War II. Arlo was awarded the Bronze Star Medal for development of Smoke Screen Aircraft Equipment and the Purple Heart Medal. He retired from the U.S. Air Force in 1966 as a second lieutenant, and then worked for Lockheed Missiles & Space Co., as well as Santa Clara County Health Offices. Arlo was a registered professional engineer, civilian aircraft pilot, and an aircraft and engine mechanic. He also worked with the Sikorsky Helicopter Division. Arlo was a longtime member of Los Altos United Methodist Church. He loved listening to music and collected coins, razors, pens, flags and model cars. He loved to celebrate all holidays and enjoyed dining at the Lobster Shack, Redwood City, Calif. Arlo will be remembered as a kind, generous man who loved M&Ms and Boston terriers. Arlo was predeceased by one brother, Charles of Carney’s Point, N.J.; his wife, Anne Regina Homyak; and their son, Scott. He is survived by a granddaughter, Heather Gilpatrick Williams of Montana; two great-grandchildren, Chloe and Deron Scott; several nieces and nephews. Memorial services to be held noon Saturday, Dec. 5, at Spangler Mortuaries, 174 North Sunnyvale Ave., Sunnyvale, Calif. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Arlo’s name to the University of Maine. Burial will occur at a later date at Arlington National Cemetery.
