DIXMONT – Marlowe Jay Smith, 61, beloved husband of Marilyn Smith, died Nov. 29, 2009, surrounded by his family at home, after a long illness. He was born Aug. 3, 1948, in Bangor, the son of Marlowe and Alice (McKinley) Smith. Jay was a graduate of Hermon High School, Class of 1966. He married his high school sweetheart and the love of his life, Marilyn Graves, June 17, 1967. He retired from Bangor Hydro after 30 years. Jay was a member of many clubs and organizations, including past president and trail master of Dixmont Gold Crest Riders Snowmobile Club, Archon Lodge No. 75 of East Dixmont, Anah Shrine and Shrine Motor Corps, Quarter Century Club of Bangor Hydro and was the proud owner of a shining 1966 Honda Dream. He enjoyed many outdoor activities, including camping, fishing, hunting, motorcycling, snowmobiling, and spending time with family and friends. Jay is survived by his beloved wife of 42 years, Marilyn; his mother, Alice of Dixmont; one son, Mark Smith and his wife, Jennifer, of Hermon; one daughter, Christina Erskine and her husband, Mark, of Dixmont; the pride and joy of his life – his five grandchildren, Baylee, Zack, Nate, Derek and Alec; mother-in-law, Delana Graves of Etna; one brother, James Smith and wife, Cynthia, of Dixmont; three sisters, Linda Hatch and husband, James, of Waterville, Laurel Kelly and husband, Gerald, of Dixmont and Lisa Penney and husband, Kelly, of New Gloucester; many brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his father, Marlowe Smith; father-in-law, Herbert Graves; and two grandchildren, McKayla and Logan. Family and friends may visit 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Thursday at Hampden-Gilpatrick Funeral Home, 45 Western Ave., Hampden, where a funeral service will be held 10 a.m. Friday with the Rev. Robert T. Carlson officiating. Interment will be at Dixmont Corner Cemetery, Dixmont.
