TOPSHAM – Hale Nuckolls Tongren, 87, died Saturday, Nov. 28, 2009, at his home. He was born Dec. 9, 1921, in Chicago, the son of Harry A. and Linnie Nuckolls Tongren. He enlisted in the Naval Reserve in 1938, serving in the Navy through World War II. He received a commission as ensign in 1946 and served in the Navy Supply Corps until he retired as captain in 1968. While in the Navy, he attended Harvard Business School, graduating with a Master of Business Administration degree in 1959. He attended George Washington University, graduating in 1968 with a Doctor of Business Administration degree. After his retirement from the Navy, he joined the faculty of George Mason University, Fairfax, Va. He served as a trustee of George Mason University Foundation, wrote two books and, among other distinctions, was selected faculty member of Year by the GMU Alumni Association. He retired in 2001 as emeritus professor of marketing. He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Sally; his son, Eric of Brunswick; his brother, Harry G. Tongren and wife, Betty, of Orland Park, Ill.; several nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be held in the spring.
