BREWER – Leo Joseph Hartery Jr., 84, passed away Nov. 29, 2009, surrounded by his loving family, at a Bangor hospital. He was born June 20, 1925, in Brewer, the son of the late Leo and Lois (Baker) Hartery Sr. Leo served as a World War II Navy veteran stationed in Panama. He worked at Maine Central Railroad as an electrician for 38 years. He was a builder who constructed many homes in Brewer. He also owned and operated Watson’s Hardware, Brewer, for eight years. Leo loved to work and hunt. He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Hilda (LeBlanc) Hartery of Brewer; two daughters, Lynn Hilyard and husband, Peter, of Brewer, and Janet Hartery and husband, Phil McClain, of New Canaan, Conn.; six grandchildren, Dan Hilyard, Cody Hilyard, Peter Hilyard Jr., Joseph McClain, Christopher McClain and Mariah McClain; four sisters, Eileen Eaton, Ann Geaghan, Marilyn Geier and Judy Wood; many nieces and nephews. He will be remembered by a longtime friend, Doug Gaudette of Hampden. He was predeceased by four sisters, Eloise Adams, Alice Richardson, Joan Sutherland and Donna Graf. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated 11 a.m. Friday, Dec. 4, at St. Paul the Apostle Parish, St. Teresa’s Catholic Church, 436 South Main St., Brewer. Burial with military honors will be at Mount Pleasant Cemetery, Bangor. A time of fellowship and refreshments will be after at the parish center.
