CALAIS – Gladys L. Cavanagh, 103, passed away peacefully Dec. 6, 2009, at Washington Place, Calais. Gladys was born Nov. 1, 1906, on Campobello Island, New Brunswick, daughter of the late Herbert and Mame (Matthews) Calder. After school, Gladys moved away and worked in Massachusetts until returning to Eastport. Her entrepreneurial spirit led Gladys to own and operate her own beauty salon for more than 40 years in Eastport and Perry. After retirement she owned and operated Gladys Antiques, West Lubec, for many years. Gladys loved to stay active and enjoyed volunteering at Calais Regional Hospital. She had a passion for cooking and also enjoyed traveling, golfing and antiques. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her first husband, John Gough; her second husband, Kenneth Cavanagh; two sisters, Evelyn Lank and Linnie Hurley Williamson; and two brothers, Hartford and Herbert Calder. Surviving are her nieces and nephews, Reid Hurley and his wife, Jeanine, of St. Andrews, New Brunswick, Keith Hurley and his wife, Laurie, of Dartmouth, Nova Scotia, Sherry Hull and her husband, John, of Calgary, Alberta, Canada, Carmen Mitchell of Deer Island, New Brunswick, Rose Marie Patterson and her husband, Paul, of Fredericton, New Brunswick, Hugh Calder and his wife Nancy of Parrsboro, Nova Scotia, and Carol Joy Rice and her husband, Ethelbert, of Campobello Island, New Brunswick; many great-nieces and great-nephews. In keeping with Gladys’ wishes, services will be private. Burial will take place at Bayside Cemetery, Eastport.
