ORONO – Joseph A. Chase, 91, husband of the late M. Yvonne (Cavanaugh) Chase, went to be with his beloved wife, Dec. 4, 2009, at his home. He was born Feb. 12, 1918, in Frenchville, the son of Andrew and Alice (Gagnon) Chase. Joseph graduated from Orono High School. He worked for Civilian Conservation Corps from 1937 to 1939, Shaw and Tenney, and retired from the University of Maine, Orono, after 25-plus years of service. He is survived by his son, Joseph L. Chase of Webster, N.Y.; two daughters, Suzanne and her husband, Freddie Landry, of Jennings, La., and Anna Marie Darling of Old Town; one sister, Lucy Mahoney of Massachusetts; his grandson and wife, Richard Smith and Nancy of Eddington; one special great-granddaughter, Sydney Smith; six stepgranddaughters, 14 great-stepgrandchildren and seven great-great-stepgrandchildren. In addition to his parents and wife, he was predeceased by one daughter, E. Jean Smith; two sons-in-law, Richard C. Smith, and Wesley Darling; three sisters and two brothers. A funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Friday, Dec. 11, at Brookings-Smith, LaBeau Chapel, 72 Main St., Orono, with the Rev. Rudolph Leveille officiating.
