He attended the University of Maine for a short time before leaving to enter the U.S. Air Force. He married Edwina Dubay, Nov. 12, 1951. Upon returning home from the Air Force, he joined his father on the farm. Max was a municipal manager for many years before moving to Carmel, where he and his son, Phil, owned Village Market for more than a quarter of a century. Max was a lifelong member of Washburn Lodge AF & AM and Knights of Pythias. Max is survived by his wife of 19 years, Judith Buck; daughters, Susan McGown and her children, Thomas and Kathryn McGown, of Carmel, and Carol Buck-Rolland and her husband, Rob and their children, Andr?a and her husband, Tiago Domingos and Bennett Rolland, of Waitsfield, Vt.; and son, Philip Buck and his wife, Laverne, of Carmel and their children, Brady and Eric Hatch. He is also survived by Judy’s children, Richie Sutherland and his wife, Katrina and their children, Reid and Dylan, of Holden, and Stacey Sinclair and her husband, Ken and their children, Keegan, Tatum and Shae, of Barnett, Mo.; sisters, Janet Braley of Waldoboro, Marge and John Seiler of Oakfield, and Kathy and Phil Lucas of Portland; as well as many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents; his first wife, Edwina; and a brother, E. Merlyn Buck. The family thanks the staff of St. Joseph Hospital who expertly and lovingly supported the family throughout the past few years. Funeral services for Max will be held 1 p.m. Friday, Dec. 11, at Hampden-Gilpatrick Funeral Home, 45 Western Ave., Hampden, with the Rev. Robert T. Carlson officiating. Interment will be in the spring. Memorial contributions in Max’s honor may be made to Mapleton Alumni, Buck-Dow Scholarship Fund, care of Sylvia McHatten, Box 177, Mapleton, ME 04757 or Carmel Elementary Library, 50 Plymouth Road, Carmel, ME 04419. During the last several years, Max gained much enjoyment watching the children play at school out his front window. He was always “just curious” about what was going on, yet one more characteristic he passed along to his family. We will love you forever.
