LINCOLN – Linwood “Rip” E. Savage Sr., 89, went home to be with his Lord and Savior Dec. 12, 2009, while at Penobscot Valley Hospital, Lincoln. Rip was born Feb. 14, 1920, in Millinocket, the son of Everett A. Savage and Gladys (Dyer) Savage. Rip graduated from Mattanawcook Academy, Class of 1938. He served his country in World War II as an expert aerial gunner in the 379th Bombardment Group of the U.S. Air Force. He was awarded several commendations including three Oak Leaf Clusters for courage in overseas combat missions and the Distinguished Flying Cross. Rip supported his family by working long hours as a skillful mason and later as a master oil burner technician and service manager for Webber Oil Co. He will be remembered by many for his big smile, helping hands, whistling, kindness, honesty and integrity. Rip was a man of strong faith who was a devoted and loving family man. He enjoyed nature and spending time at his home on Mattanawcook Lake. “The steps of a good man are ordered by the Lord: and he delighteth in his way.” Psalms 37:23. He is survived by his daughter, Ronda Carver and her husband, Peter, of Hersey; his son, Earl Savage Jr. and his wife, Leisa, of Lincoln; his daughter, Carol Phinney and Woodrow Phinney of Waterville; 10 grandchildren, Kelly McAvoy and her husband, Shaun, Laurie Soltys and her husband, Alan, Stacy McCarthy, David Davis and his wife, Donna, Shari Davis, Scott Phinney, Robert Phinney, Traci Grillon, Leiana Savage and Linai Savage; seven great-grandchildren, Kylee Holman and her husband, Josh, Alex McAvoy, Dean Soltys, Christopher Davis, Casey Davis, Drew Grillon and Lauri Grillon; one brother, Charlie Savage and his wife, Pricilla, of Tennessee; and one sister, “Annie Elaine” Wyman and her husband, Vernol, of Newport. He was predeceased by his beloved wife, Laura; a son-in-law, Gary Palmer; brothers, Frederick and Everett Savage; and sisters, Madeline Morreau, Eldora Burellis, Laura Nickerson, Joan Wilson and Doris Sweet. A memorial is scheduled for 1 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 17, at The Methodist Church, 8 Lee Road, Lincoln. In lieu of flowers, donations in Rip’s memory may be made to The Methodist Church.
