BRISTOL, R.I. and PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Sidney O. Young Jr., 86, died Jan. 8, 2010, at the Rhode Island Veterans Home, Bristol, R.I. He was a longtime resident of Providence, R.I., before moving to the veterans’ home. Sidney was born Nov. 19, 1923, in Auburn, son of Sidney O. and Charlotte (Hurlburt) Young. His family moved to East Machias when he was a young child. He graduated from Washington Academy, Class of 1941. He served in the U.S. Army from 1943 to 1946. After his discharge, Sidney graduated from the University of Maine with a Bachelor of Business Administration degree. He was employed as a city/town manager in various places throughout New England. He is survived by his brother, Richard H. and wife, Cecile Young, of Sun City Center, Fla., and East Machias; his sister, Elizabeth and husband, Dale Pettegrow, of Zephyrhills, Fla., and East Machias; and five nephews. The family thanks the nurses and staff of the Rhode Island Veterans Home for their care and support during Sidney’s three years as a resident. A memorial service will be held in Machias and interment will be in Milbridge at a future date.
