NAPLES – Maryann Hathaway, 73, died peacefully Jan. 11, 2010, with her family at her side at Maine Medical Center after a long illness. She was born July 19, 1936, in Bangor, the daughter of Joseph and Kathleen (Clukey) McCarthy. She graduated from John Bapst High School, Bangor, and Mercy Hospital School of Nursing, Portland, in 1957. In 1958, she married Peter B. Hathaway of Naples, and they moved to Winchester, Mass., where Maryann worked as an operating and emergency room nurse at Winchester Hospital. In 1964, she left nursing to raise a son and daughter. She enjoyed all the related family activities, including taking up skiing, although not a favorite pastime, so as to be with her family. In the mid-1980s, she took refresher courses at Boston College and returned to nursing in the outpatient department of Danvers Hospital. In 2001, she retired to Naples with her husband. There she enjoyed traveling and helping with the restoration of the family farm. She was an avid novel reader and new recipe cook. Maryann’s parents; and sister, Patricia Schenning, predeceased her. She is survived by and sadly missed by her husband, Peter Hathaway of Naples; her brother, Joseph McCarthy Jr. of Ellsworth; son, Steven C. Hathaway and his wife, Sokun Pech, of Lynn, Mass.; daughter, Kristin A. Hathaway of Stowe, Vt.; granddaughter, Savannah M. Hathaway of Lynn, Mass.; many nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be held 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 23, at Casco Village Church, 941 Meadow Road, Route 121, Casco. There will be a family burial in the spring. A celebration of Maryann’s life will be held in June on a date to be announced.
