BANGOR – Marlene “Mama B.” Bernaiche died Jan. 20, 2010, surrounded by her family at her home. She was born Dec. 10, 1942, in Bangor, the daughter of Maurice and Phyllis (Hazelwood) McKenzie. Our mother won an Oscar each year in our eyes. Not only did she raise her own family, but cared for and nurtured many others that crossed her path, hence her given name “Mama B.” Surviving are her children, Marie Huckabey and her husband, Stephen, Peter Bernaiche and his wife, Heather, and Miguel Garcia and his girlfriend, Nellie; and stepchildren, Kandy, Michael and Joey. Marlene referred to her grandchildren and great-grandchildren as Nana’s little angels: grandchildren, Angela, John, Justine, Peter, Christopher, Tarik, Seth, Douglas, Samantha and Fred, and her newest little angel Isaiah; and great-grandchildren, Madalyn, John, Landon, Sareya, Ayden and Douglas. Also surviving is one brother, William McKenzie. Marlene went to join her beloved son, William R. “Billy” Bernaiche; stepson, Wayne; sister, Barbara Nolan; brother, Roger McKenzie; and two very special angels, Gracelyn and Trevor. She will be missed by many nieces, nephews, friends and extended family. Each of them had a special place in her heart. Relatives and friends are invited to share conversation and refreshments 2-4 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 24, at Brookings-Smith Family Center, 163 Center St., Bangor. Gifts in her memory may be sent to American Red Cross, 9008 Hammond St., Bangor, ME 04401. Condolences to the family may be expressed at www.BrookingsSmith.com.
