TROY – Robert “Bob” Steele, 79, died peacefully Friday, Jan. 29, 2010, surrounded by family and friends at Togus VA Hospital. He was born Nov. 7, 1930, in Plymouth, the son of Joseph and Doris (McAtee) Steele. After finishing school and working on the family farm he served in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War. He spent many years as a construction worker and truck driver for H.E. Sargent Inc. and Merrill Transport Co. He was a 53-year member of Archon Masonic Lodge, Dixmont. Bob had a great sense of humor and a memorable laugh. He took pleasure in many different hobbies and activities throughout the years, including motorcycle riding, reading and tinkering. However, what he enjoyed most was deer hunting in the Maine woods whenever he had the chance. He is survived by six children, Judy Steele, Allen and Jennifer Steele of Morgantown, W.Va., James Steele of Morgantown, W.Va., Helen and Joe Mazur of Avon, Conn., Kathleen Steele and Andrew Stevens of Phoenix and Annie Steele and Demetrio Duran of San Diego; one brother and his wife, Ronald and Terry Steele of Palmyra; a nephew and his wife, Schuyler and Joan Steele of Anson; two granddaughters, DeeDee and Sierra; and two great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by his parents; and a brother, Philip “Pip” Steele. Bob’s family expresses their gratitude to the staff of Togus VA Hospital with special thanks to the nurses in the special care unit and “his girls” in dialysis. Graveside Masonic services will be held in the spring when the lilacs are in bloom at Sawyer Cemetery, Plymouth, with the date to be announced.
