BANGOR – Mary I. Gilgan, 87, died Jan. 30, 2010, at the Maine Veterans Home. She was born Oct. 27, 1922, in Bangor, the daughter of Frank and Mary (Veilleux) Soucy. Mary graduated from John Bapst High School and joined the Navy as a Wave serving in World War II and Korea. After the war, Mary and her husband, Peter, returned to Bangor to raise their family. She worked in the family business as a cake decorator at Frank’s Bakery. Mary was a communicant of St. Mary’s Catholic Church, a member of Daughters of Isabella, and a volunteer for Meals on Wheels and Project Ride. She is survived by her loving husband of 53 years, Peter Gilgan of Bangor; four children, John and his wife, Karen, Kevin and Robert Gilgan, all of Bangor, and Maureen O’Malley and her partner, Tracey, of Bucksport; daughter-in-law, Evelyn Conrad of Brewer; six grandchildren, Alexandria, Hilary and her husband, Brandon, Megan and her husband, Justin, Colby, Margaret Mary and Chelsea; as well as four great-grandchildren, Gabriel, Ellie, Mary and Iris. She is also survived by two brothers and two sisters-in-law, Dennis “Don” Soucy and his wife, Connie, Frank Soucy and his wife, Mary, Angela Soucy and Nancy Soucy; many nieces, nephews and cousins. She was predeceased by four brothers, Robert, Joseph, John and James; and three sisters, Dorothy, Edith and Genevieve. The family thanks the staff of the Maine Veterans Home for their loving support and care. Friends may call 6-8 p.m. Tuesday at Greenlawn Funeral Home. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated 11 a.m. Wednesday at St. Mary’s Catholic Church. A reception for family and friends will be held afterward at the home of Evelyn and Steven Conrad, 60 Washington St., Brewer. Interment with full military honors will be 11 a.m. Friday at the Maine Veterans Cemetery, Augusta.
