ISLAND FALLS and HOULTON – Eleanor Claire (Pomeroy) Gellerson, 95, died Sunday, Feb. 28, 2010, at a local health care facility. She was born March 28, 1914, in Island Falls, the daughter of Fredrick and Etta (Martin) Pomeroy. She married Waldo P. Gellerson, April 19, 1945. She worked at Island Falls Rationing Board during World War II and was a nurse at Milliken Memorial Hospital for many years. Later, she also did some private duty nursing. She was a 4-H leader, was active in Island Falls Senior Citizens and served as a RSVP volunteer. She was a longtime member of Whittier Congregational Church. Eleanor is survived by one son, Conrad and Roberta Walton of Caribou; two daughters, Paula and Perry Lilley of Smyrna, and Etta and Russell Veysey of Topsham; 12 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Lona Pomeroy of Houlton and Marietta DiSanto of Reading, Mass.; a sister-in-law, Mary Lou Pomeroy of Caribou; several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband, Waldo P. Gellerson; one son, Robert Gellerson; two brothers, James and Clifford Pomeory; and one sister, Evelyn Crockett. The family thanks the staff at Madigan House and Madigan Estates for their gentle, loving and compassionate care during the years Eleanor spent there. Friends may call noon-2 p.m. Wednesday, March 3, at Whittier Congregational Church, Island Falls, where funeral services will begin 2 p.m. with the Rev. Naomi Sam-Kpakra and Pastor Amanda Wagner officiating. A reception will be after the service in the church dining room.
