BUCKSPORT – Norman Albert Fitzgerald, 69, died Friday, March 5, 2010, at Courtland Rehabilitation and Living Center, Ellsworth. He was born June 29, 1940, in Waterville, the first son of Lawrence and Ellen Fitzgerald. Norman grew up in Vassalboro, graduating from Erskine Academy in 1960. He earned his bachelor’s degree in physical education from the University of Maine, Orono, in 1964 and his Master of Education degree in 1978 from the University of Maine. Norman taught at Higgins Classical Institute and Stonington High School prior to teaching physical education in the Bucksport elementary schools for 23 years. He retired from teaching in 1990 and worked for the town of Bucksport until his passing. He was a highly visible employee, maintaining playing fields, the waterfront and recreation areas for the enjoyment of residents and visitors. When not working, he spent his leisure time running, skiing, playing hockey and softball, and any other activity that would keep him in top physical condition. Norm was a familiar figure at road races throughout the area, winning numerous events on the “over 50” division. He had a passion for old movies, particularly Westerns and developed a strong interest in astronomy later in his life. He was the personification of a lifelong learner. He enjoyed time riding around town in his Mustang convertible and loved to kayak on the pond at his daughter’s home in Otis. He also enjoyed his annual trip to Oregon in November, spending time with his sister and skiing on Mount Hood. He was a lifelong supporter of the Boston Red Sox, traveling to Baltimore and Toronto to support them, and numerous trips to Fenway Park with family and friend. He also enjoyed supporting the Portland Trail Blazers. A great pleasure for Norm was time spent with family. Norm is survived by his daughter, Heather Peasley and her husband, Robert, of Otis; a grandson, Matthew Peasley of Otis; one sister, Mary Johnson of Salem, Ore.; one brother, Carl Fitzgerald and his wife, Delores, of Kittery; as well as several nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his twin sister, Nancy, who died shortly after her birth. The family thanks the dedicated staff at Courtland Rehabilitation and Living Center for their loving and compassionate care of Norman. Family and friends will gather for visitation 6-8 p.m. Monday, March 8, at Mitchell-Tweedie Funeral Home, 28 Elm St., Bucksport, where a funeral service will be held 1 p.m. Tuesday with Pastor Peter Remick officiating.
