BARRINGTON, N.H. – Mary Day Colcord, 54, passed away Sunday, March 14, 2010, at her home, after living with breast cancer for 20 years. Mary was born Oct. 30, 1955, in Blue Hill, to Arno and Dorothy (Butler) Day. Mary was raised in Brooklin. She graduated from Deer Isle-Stonington High School, Deer Isle, in 1974, and went on to graduate from the University of Southern Maine with a degree in nursing in 1978. She was a nurse in the greater Seacoast of New Hampshire for almost 20 years before leaving the profession in 1997. She chose to spend more time with her family, to paint, embroider, hook rugs, sew and volunteer with the Friends of Barrington Public Library. Though she spent most of her adult life in Barrington, N.H., her heart was never far from the small Downeast Maine towns of Brooklin, where she grew up, and Little Deer Isle, where her husband grew up. Mary loved spending springs and summers there with her husband, children, and extended family. She also loved gardening, her black lab, Ellie, the Red Sox and bird watching. Her greatest joys were the “simple pleasures” life had to offer. She is survived by her husband of 29 years, Tom Colcord; daughters, Hillary Colcord and Kelsey Colcord; mother, Dorothy (Butler) Day; sister, Lois (Day) Washburn and her husband, John; brother, James Day and his wife, Bertha; brother, Stephen Day and his wife, Deborah; brother-in-law, Charles Colcord and his wife, Susan; as well as many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her father, Arno Day; and her beloved uncle, Frank “June” Day. A memorial service will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, March 20, at Purdy Memorial Chapel, Route 4, 2 Concord Road, Lee, N.H. Donations may be made to Arno Day Memorial Fund, care of the Maine Community Foundation or the American Cancer Society. To sign our online guest book, please go to www.purdyfuneralservice.com.
