ORONO – Geneva M. Pratt, 96, died March 28, 2010, at a Dover-Foxcroft hospital. She was the wife of the late Horace A. Pratt. She was born June 6, 1913, in Trenton, the daughter of Eben N. and Olive B. (Closson) Hodgkins. Geneva attended Jordan River School, Trenton, and graduated from Ellsworth High School, Class of 1930, as valedictorian of her class. She also completed the teachers training course of Beal Business College, Bangor, in 1932. Geneva was employed by the University of Maine for several years, and also worked at the office of a Bangor attorney. Geneva and Horace were married in 1937 and resided in Orono, later moving to Stillwater, where they raised their three children. Geneva was an active member of Orono United Methodist Church since 1937, which found her taking responsibilities on committees, in the church school as teacher and superintendent, and was a member of the Hand Bell Choir for five years. She was past president of the W.S.C.S., now United Methodist Women, and served as its secretary, as well as secretary of the Homemakers Club and Margaret Cane Circle. Geneva was a past worthy matron of Katahdin Chapter No. 121, Order of the Eastern Star of Old Town, and filled several other offices in that order. She was a past president of Old Town Womens Club. Her volunteer work included being an aircraft spotter in Old Town during World War II, a Girl Scout troop leader, and director of a girls choir at Stillwater Federated Church. For several years she helped with Dorothy Day Soup Kitchen, Bangor, and tutored several students for Literacy Volunteers of America. Because of her many activities she was twice nominated for the Jefferson Award. Geneva was predeceased by her husband in 1980, her parents; brothers, Laurence, Harold and Franklin; and sisters, Natalie Hazel and Marion. She is survived by her daughters, Judith Thompson and husband, Walter, of Atkinson, and Edith Pratt McOrmond of Holden; son, David Pratt and family, Laurie Levesque, Jess and Chris, of Greenbush; grandchildren, Tom Thompson and wife, Stephany, of Exeter, Becky Thompson Burns of West Monroe, N.Y., Bob Thompson and wife, Kristin, of Charleston, Sheryl McOrmond Leidecker and husband, Jim, of Howell, N.J., and Jeff McOrmond and wife, Stephanie, of Richboro, Pa.; and great-grandchildren, Curtis Burns, Riley and Ricky Thompson, Jared and Janna Leidecker, Gabriel, Nori and Kayla McOrmond and Emma Thompson. Also surviving are several nieces, nephews and cousins; and her lifelong friend, Marguerite Carter Thornton of Florida. Funeral services will be held 10 a.m. Friday, April 2, at Orono United Methodist Church, 36 Oak St., Orono, with Pastor Stephen Smith officiating. Interment will be after the service at Noble Ferry Cemetery, Clinton/Hinckley.
