CALAIS – Jo-An Moore went into the arms of her precious angels, Thursday, April 8, 2010. She was born March 25, 1949, in Bangor, the eldest child of Paul P. and Marguerite E. (Welch) Vance. She was a 1967 graduate of John Bapst High School. She studied elocution and voice with Mr. William Cupp of Bangor, and was classically trained musically at Northern Conservatory of Music, Bangor, in piano, violin and opera. She was self-taught in guitar, organ, drums, clarinet and alto saxophone. She was also a member of many years of Bangor Savoyards, now Bangor Community Theater, and performed in many of their musical productions – her favorites being “Camelot” and “Finian’s Rainbow.” She was a graduate of Eastern Maine Technical College as a licensed practical nurse and New York University with a degree in nursing and her registered nurse licensure. She spent more than 35 years in the health profession and often said she received much more from her patients than she was ever able to give. Because she had no birth children, she considered each and every one of her patients as her “baby,” no matter their age. Throughout the years Jo-An worked at Eastern Maine Medical Center, St. Joseph Hospital, various Bangor nursing homes, Calais Regional Hospital, Community Health and Counseling, Sunrise County Home Care and Pleasant Point Health Center, in addition to performing insurance company physicals and having her own business as a medical-legal consultant. Jo-An enjoyed people, music, the arts, crossword puzzles, camping in the woods, and she was an avid and voracious reader. She was also intensely proud of her Irish heritage. Jo-An is survived by her brothers, Richard Vance of Bangor and Phil Vance of Florida; a sister, Paula McCafferty of Otis; niece, Brandy and nephew, Nicholas, of Florida; nephews, Jonathan and Ethan of Bangor; along with a number of aunts, uncles and cousins. She is also survived by “the daughter of her heart,” Tammy Potter of Mechanic Falls; and “sisters of her heart,” Ellen Sable, Ella Robinson, Jeannie Seavey, Cyndi Lewey, Bonnie Marble, Carol Beausoliel, Starr Miller and Catherine Scullin. Jo-An was predeceased by her parents; and three beloved and adored pets, Scamp, Pepper and Prince. She wishes to thank Dr. Peter Wilkinson and Dr. Paul Emery for their years of caring, compassion and medical expertise. At her request, there will be no visiting hours. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated 1 p.m. Saturday, April 10, at Immaculate Conception R.C. Church, Calais, with burial afterward at Calais Cemetery. Also at her request, in lieu of flowers, please make donations to PAWS Humane Society, P.O. Box 182, Calais, ME 04619 or to an animal shelter of your choice. Arrangements by Mays Funeral Home, Calais and Eastport. Condolences and memories may be shared at www.maysfuneralhome.com.
