WHITNEYVILLE – Ralph E. Pennell Sr., 93, died April 25, 2010, at his residence. He was born April 6, 1917, in Whitneyville, son of Frank and Zella (Albee) Pennell. After high school he served his country in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He later worked for many years as an electrician at the Cutler naval base power plant. He was a 36-year member of Harwood Masonic Lodge No. 91 AF & AM, Machias, and a member of E.H. Johnson American Legion Post No. 9, Machias. He loved gardening, enjoyed coaching Little League, and was proud to have coached an 18-0 record for three consecutive years. He was active in town politics serving as selectman and poll clerk for many years. He is survived by a son, Ralph E. “Skip” Pennell Jr. and his wife, Roberta; a granddaughter, Samantha and her husband, Troy Thompson; three great-grandchildren, Emily, Bryce and Nehemiah; many nieces, nephews and cousins. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his wife, Mary B. (Bridges); three brothers, Carroll, Austin and Herbert; and one sister, Olive. The family especially thanks the nurses and certified nurses’ aides of Community Health and Counseling for their dedicated care and services. Friends are invited to visit with the family 6-8 p.m. Wednesday, April 28, at McClure Family Funeral Services, corner of Charles and Drisko streets, Machias, where a Masonic memorial service will be conducted 7 p.m. Funeral services will be held 10 a.m. Thursday, April 29, at Whitneyville Congregational Church with Pastor Betty Duzen and Al Nehring officiating. Interment with military honors will be afterward at Longfellow Cemetery, Machias. A reception will be after at Norman Duzen Fellowship Hall.
