BANGOR – Roland E. French, beloved husband of 62 years to Blanche (Shirland) French, died May 11, 2010. He was born March 10, 1925, the son of Lewis D. and Charlene (Pinkham) French. Roland attended schools in Orono and Bangor. He studied engineering at the University of Maine. He began his career working at the nuclear plant in Portland, Conn., working there until he moved home to Bangor and worked many years for the city of Bangor in construction. Roland was chosen as Most Valuable Employee in 1969 and was honored with a banquet at Pilot’s Grill attended by more than 300 people. Roland was a kind man who was ready to give his help as needed. After retirement he and Blanche enjoyed the winters spent at their home on the Gulf of Mexico in Florida. Roland was a veteran of World War II in the 168th Combat Engineers in the European Theater. He was held a prisoner of war in Stalag 4B until his escape. He received the Silver Star and two Purple Hearts. Roland enjoyed playing his guitar and listening to his ham radio. Roland loved his creator, Jehovah. He attended the Kingdom Hall in Bangor and Florida, and enjoyed hearing the truth of the Bible and the promise at John 5:28-29, Rev. 21:3-7 and Psalms 37: 9-11 and 29. Roland was predeceased by his parents; and brother, Carlton. In addition to his wife, Blanche, he is survived by his sister, Muriel of Florida; sisters-in-law, Winifred Curtis of Connecticut, and Beverly and husband, Michael Oller, of Texas; many beloved nieces, nephews and friends; and his dog, Pollie. Services will be announced at a later date.
