PRESQUE ISLE – Lois M. (Durost) Jackson, 77, passed away Saturday, May 22, 2010, at Aroostook Health Center, Mars Hill, after recently suffering a stroke. Lois was born Sept. 29, 1932, in Presque Isle, daughter of the late Verdell Hubbard and Gladys (Richardson) Hubbard of Castle Hill. At 3 years of age, Thomas and Queenie Porter, of Castle Hill, later of Blaine, became Lois’ foster parents and provided the only childhood home she ever knew. In December 1949, Lois married Theodore F. Durost of Mars Hill. Mom was a wonderful caregiver to our dad who suffered with debilitating rheumatoid arthritis most of his adult life; he passed away at age 51. During their more than 30 years of marriage, mom was a wonderful helpmate to dad as he served as a minister to congregations in churches located in Masardis and Monticello. In September 2009, while living in Avilla, Ind., Mom lost her elder son, Sheldon, her primary caregiver, in a traffic accident. She moved back to Presque Isle in December 2009, to be near her daughter. At the time of her death, she was living at Leisure Gardens, Presque Isle. Lois is survived by her daughter, Lynn (Durost) Lombard and her husband, Richard, of Caribou; and a son, Anthony Durost of Cloverdale, Ind. The family thanks the wonderful staff of The Aroostook Medical Center and Aroostook Health Center, Mars Hill, for the extraordinary care they gave our mom at the end of her life. A private memorial service will be held Thursday, May 27, at Pierce Cemetery, Mars Hill, with the Rev. H. Mark Carter and the Rev. Mark Babin officiating. Interment will be afterward for Lois and her son, Sheldon. Arrangements by Mockler Funeral Home, 24 Reservoir St., Caribou. www.mocklerfuneralhome.com
