Phil enlisted in the Navy in 1944 when he was only 16 years old, but was later released when they discovered he was underage. His legal enlistment started May 15, 1945, after convincing his parents to consent to his enlistment. The career choice was a good match, for he rose rapidly through the enlisted ranks and retired as a highly decorated senior chief, equipment operator senior chief. He was the recipient of the Bronze Star in addition to many other medals during his career. Phil was selected as Recruiter of the Year during his stint as Navy recruiter in Syracuse, N.Y. His 30-year naval career spanned the globe from his first duties as a guard for Japanese prisoners of war on Truk Island in the Pacific, to Newfoundland, Cuba and Bermuda, three tours in Vietnam and numerous other assignments in the U.S. and overseas. His years with the SeaBees construction crews were the highlight of his career and provided some of his greatest accomplishments. Phil retired May 26, 1975, to begin a new career as a civilian. Returning to his hometown of Brooksville, he built a log home for himself. That project served as the starting point of his second 30-year career as a contractor, building a dozen log and stick-built homes, and renovating many others. He served as deputy sheriff for many years and also served on the planning board and budget committee for Brooksville. Phil is survived by his companion, Elizabeth Snow; stepchildren, Lynden and Carrie Snow of Brooksville; grandchildren, Maranda and Charlotte; two sons, Brett Steele of the Belfast area and Brian Steele of Portland; two brothers, Robert Steele of Brooklin and Ronald Steele of Lewiston; one sister, Frances Crowe of Detroit; many nieces and nephews, and numerous foster children.
