BANGOR – Yu Kao “Jack” Hsu, 88, beloved husband of Martha Hsu, passed away May 28, 2010, at a local hospital. He was born in Hunan, China. After graduating from National Central University in 1949, he followed the nationalist government to Taiwan and worked for the government. He also taught high school in Taiwan. Many students still remember what a good teacher he was. He co-wrote a geometry textbook for high school students in Taiwan. In 1956, he came to the U.S. After receiving master’s degrees from the University of Maryland and the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, he attended Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, Troy, N.Y., where he received his doctorate in mechanics in 1966. He taught at West Virginia University from 1966 to 1971. He taught mathematics at the University of Maine from 1971 until he retired in 1993. He received a summer faculty fellowship from NASA, working at Goddard Space Flight Center in the summers of 1987 and 1988, then at Langley Research Center in the summer of 1989. In addition to his wife, he is survived by his son, Timothy and his wife, Rita Hao, of San Francisco; his daughter, Melinda Hsu Taylor and her husband, Thom, of Los Angeles; and grandchildren, Hazel Hsu and Penelope and Jackson Taylor. Friends may call 6-8 p.m. Wednesday, June 2, at Brookings-Smith, 133 Center St., Bangor. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated 11 a.m. Thursday, June 3, at St. Paul the Apostle, St. John’s Catholic Church, 207 York St., Bangor.
