PRESQUE ISLE – Winona Lamoreau, 82, went to sleep in the arms of the Lord June 17, 2010, at a local longterm care facility. Winona was born Sept. 11, 1928, to Warren and Alice Young and grew up in a large family in the beautiful hills of Vermont. She was married to Kenneth Lamoreau, in 1952, and moved to Northern Maine to take on the role of wife and helpmate. During the next few years she became the mother of four children. Being the wife of a farmer entailed many roles, she worked hard to help keep the home in order, keep children clean, fed and tended to while helping with the planting and harvesting of the potato fields. She acquired several nicknames by those who knew her, Nonie to her family, Windy to her husband and Winnie to her caretakers in her last years. Winona was a great animal lover and the home was always full of four-legged children, as well as the two-legged kind. Cats, dogs, rabbits, horses, fish, turtles, guinea pigs and birds abounded in the home and her love for animals was imparted to her children and grandchildren. She raised many litters of poodles, and later shih tzu puppies that filled the house with licks and love, and went on to bring great companionship to many other homes in Northern Maine. There were as many as nine little doggie friends that graced the house during her last years at home. Cold enough for a three-dog night? No problem, there were plenty to go around. For many years Winona groomed dogs and it was a job she took great pride in. Many fuzzy, furry or unkempt dogs came into her home only to leave looking beautiful and well loved. Winona was a member of the Seventh-day Adventist church all her life; she loved her Lord and filled many positions in the church throughout the years. She truly had the gift of hospitality and every Sabbath afternoon, invited church members home for a wonderful meal. She was a great cook and her baked beans and lasagna were legendary! Her hobbies included sewing, ceramics and crocheting; she loved making little sweater sets for anyone having a new baby. Winona loved her grandchildren with all her heart and spent many hours rocking, cuddling and caring for them throughout the years. In the last year, visits from her great-grandchildren gave her great joy. Winona is survived by three children, David and his wife, Kim Lamoreau, of Caribou and their sons, Aaron and Brian Lamoreau, Kevin and his wife, Rita Lamoreau, of Presque Isle and their children, Justin, Brittany and Devin, and Kathy and her husband, Robert Marston, of Presque and their children, Greg, Shaun, Brianna and Mallory; and three great-grandchildren, Matthew, Luke and Sophia. She also has several brothers and sisters living in Vermont and Florida. She was predeceased by one son, Joseph Lamoreau; and her husband, Kenneth Lamoreau. A graveside memorial will be held Monday, June 21, at Johnson’s Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Diabetes Society. Arrangements in care of Duncan-Graves Funeral Home, 30 Church St., Presque Isle. Condolences may be expressed online at www.duncan-graves.com.
