BANGOR – Jack Earl Marshall passed away July 5, 2010, surrounded by family and friends at a Bangor hospital. He will be missed by all who knew him. He was born Feb. 28, 1929, in Oklahoma City, the son of Sam Wills Marshall Sr. and Gladys Marie (Weeks) Marshall. Jack spent his childhood in Ladonia, Texas, and graduated from East Texas State Teachers College and received a master’s degree from Southern Methodist University. He served 13 years in the U.S. Air Force, reaching the rank of captain. Jack worked at New York Port Authority for 10 years before moving to Ellsworth to open a campground. Later he built several housing projects, one in Ellsworth, and three in Machias. He was a playwright and teacher to many young playwrights. He started and ran the Playwrights Theatre Group, Dallas, putting on original plays from new authors. He was a member of Actors Guild of New York. He was predeceased by his brothers, Robert E. Lee Marshall and William Weeks Marshall; and his sister, Clara Josephine Marshall Kennedy. He is survived by his brother, Sam Marshall Jr.; his sister, Mary Jobe, both of Wolfe City Texas; and his sister, Barbara “Bobbie” Sparks of Hope, Ark. Jack is also survived by his ex-wife, Mary Marquardt Marshall of Ellsworth; his children, Geoffrey Marshall of Pittsboro, N.C., Karin Wilkes of Ellsworth, Robert E. Lee Marshall of St. Augustine, Fla., and Sharon Perry of Cherryfield; his eight grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Jack will be missed by his partner of 30 years, Douglas Gagnon, and his sons, Tony and Nathan; and his special friend, John Curtis. He will be greatly missed by his many, many friends. No one will forget his joy of life, boundless energy, his positive attitude and generosity. The memorial service will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, July 10, at Unitarian-Universalist Church, 121 Bucksport Road, Ellsworth, with the Rev. Mark Worth.
