MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – Dr. Andrew C. Swan Jr., 79, died July 9, 2010, in Nashville, Tenn., after a short illness. Andy was born Nov. 12, 1930, the only son of A. Coburn Swan Sr. of Princeton and Florence Cyr Harper of Houlton. Andy earned a Bachelor of Science degree from Maine Maritime Academy, Castine, and a Master of Education degree at the University of Maine, Orono. After a short career at sea and a short career in teaching, he moved his family to Tennessee and enrolled at George Peabody College, where he earned his doctorate in psychology. Andy spent the rest of his career in Tennessee at the second largest veterans hospital in the United States, where he taught and counseled the young veterans assigned there. Andy was predeceased by his parents; two half sisters, Betty Butler of Orono and Ruth O’Brien of Bangor; and two half brothers, Earl and James Harper of Houlton. Survivors include his wife, Sherlea; son, Scott A. Swan Sr. and family of Memphis, Tenn.; a daughter, Karen Swan Girvan and family of Anchorage, Alaska; a devoted half sister, Dr. Clara Swan of Hampden; a close niece, Clara Sheehan and family of Bucksport; and close cousins, Jim and Peg Swan of Old Town. Many nieces, nephews and cousins in Maine, Massachusetts, Alaska and Tennessee remember him fondly. Burial will be held at a later date.
